Students benefit greatly from learning an instrument, especially when they can accompany themselves while playing an instrument. Ukulele can be a gateway to guitar for those interested, or it can be a simpler way for students to learn a musical instrument and be able to play music they are interested in. Researchers have found that learning to play a musical instrument can enhance verbal memory, spatial reasoning and literacy skills. Playing an instrument makes you use both sides of your brain, which strengthens memory power. Students not only improve their musical skills, they gain confidence, learn to work as a team, grow their performance skills, and round out their elementary education.
Learning an not only instrument teaches musical skills such as rhythm and note reading, but it allows for creativity and self expression.
There is not a lot of opportunity for these students to experience new instruments or even learn an instrument for an extended period of time. With little to no budget, instruments are mostly provided by donation. The little budget that music gets awarded usually goes to instrument repairs or materials that are prioritized over fixing broken instruments. I want to give my students every opportunity to experience music in as many ways as possible. Ukuleles will enhance the learning experience for my students.
