The switch from learning-to-read to reading-to-learn is crucial in 3rd grade. Students are now asked to make meaning and gain knowledge in through their reading. How does this switch happen? When are these skills taught? During the mini lesson! Mini lessons are conducted daily to introduce new or review previously-learned skills and strategies. Each day, when students come to the rug for a mini lesson, we will gather around this easel to learn and grow together. Students will be able to create charts to better understand information. These charts are then hung in the classroom to reference this information throughout the school year. Lessons will include reading comprehension strategies, literary analysis, phonics lessons, vocabulary words, spelling words, strategies for narrative, opinion, and informative writing, and writing about reading.
