I adopted the use of flexible seating in my classroom three years ago. I have found that there are many benefits to have this option for first graders. Students learn best when they have a small amount of control in their environment such as choosing where and how they will sit. This choice also allows them the opportunity to change where they want to sit based on their needs. This is very beneficial to my autistic students whose needs can change multiple times a day. Their learning is greatly influenced by their environmental sensory experiences. Young children are challenged with sitting still for long period of times. Flexible seating allows them to wiggle, stand, lay down or move within a teacher approved limit. This in return greatly lowers the disruptive behaviors in the classroom. My first graders are very active and allowing them to move truly makes my job easier. Flexible seating encourages community. In our classroom where we have special needs children, we call our class a school family. We promote sharing and the students often help guide or offer assistance to our special needs students. Flexible seating helps students by giving them the stimulation of moving and sensory feelings. This helps them to stay focused. This is important with my students who have ADHD and sensory disorders. This project is to upgrade our ball seating and offer seating around our low table. We are requesting the balls with the little legs so that students do not have a hard time keeping the balls in one location. They are smaller than the balls we currently have which will fit my students better. We are requesting the two rugs because our carpet was replaced with tile. I wanted to give the children softer surface to sit on.
