My students LOVE graphic novels and have been asking for them since the beginning of the school year. At present, I only have a few graphic novels in the classroom and I see that this is a genre the students respond to and want to read. We would use these books to spark conversations, make recommendations and just get kids talking about reading. When students have choice, their interest skyrockets and when their friends suggest books, they are more likely to give them a try. Struggling and reluctant readers often find graphic novels less intimidating, more accessible, and more enjoyable as they journey into more complex texts. I can also use graphic novels to reach my higher readers by incorporating them into lessons about analyzing, inferring, and character development. These graphic novels will be available for my students for years to come, serving hundreds of different students as they discover the love of reading and achieve their reading potential.
