In a band rehearsal, every student is important. The success of each rehearsal and performance depends upon students putting in time practicing not only their instrument, but how to listen. When making music, students are not only listening to themselves, but to their section and the band as whole. One of the hardest concepts to teach a band is how to correctly listen to one another. Tuners help us bridge the gap between playing and listening by providing a visual aid for students to see whether or not they are in tune with themselves. By eliminating one of the variables surrounding listening, students who are learning how to listen effectively can easily bypass the first step and begin listening to their section or the ensemble as a whole. As the year goes on, tuners will float in and out of rehearsals for all three of our concert bands. By the end of the year, some of our students should be able to adjust their intonation without the aid of a tuner. But until then, tuners are a necessary step in our students' musical education.
