Picture books are often overlooked by upper grade teachers as being too young or not appropriate, but provide a variety of experiences to teach and share about lives and learning that may not have been a part of their previous personal experience. Picture books allow us to learn about the lives and experiences of others not in our cultural and/or ethnic community; this helps increase our ability to have empathy and understanding toward others. Our level of experience with outside cultures is critical to our kind and respectful interactions with others in our society; there is no room for fear.
