As is often the case, students learn best by doing, not just seeing or hearing. When teaching different concepts in math, I have found that my students struggle with such "abstract" ideas. They need to see and manipulate items to make the math make sense. With the use of manipulatives, I can make math come alive. When dealing with positive and negative numbers, it is often hard to see how they work. With the tiles and other manipulatives, the students will be able to actually construct equations to see how numbers change according to their sign. This will help those students who need to see it to believe it. I believe this will also involve the reluctant learners. The use of the game will provide a fun way to interact and learn new concepts. These materials will truly help my students be more confident in math, which will carry over into all other areas of their lives.
