I teach 9th grade English at a school with a high poverty rate. I have found that many of my students have not grown up in a house of "readers" and have yet to discover the joy of reading for pleasure. This lack of reading has affected their academics. They struggle with tests and comprehensions; this affects their self-esteem as well. They do not think college is possible because they have had so few successes in education so far.
