I teach in an urban school district and many of my students have significant trauma or poverty issues. Many of them are reluctant readers and come to my class with skills at a 2nd-grade level at best. Providing a space where they can sit in comfortable chairs, and have access to some incentives for reading better allows them to practice the phonics skills that they are lacking. My students know that they struggle with reading and often tell me that they hate to read. As the year goes on and they learn the skills necessary to read independently I love watching them find comfy areas in the room to curl up and read a book. Through this project, I would like to create more of those spaces so that they are not fighting to be the first one to the comfy rotation.
