With the water quality testing kit supplies, my students will have the opportunity to make a real world connection with being able to test several bodies of water located around Robeson County, North Carolina. In the 8th grade science curriculum it is essential that our students understand that just because a body of water looks clean because it's clear does not necessarily mean that it is a healthy body of water. Our students will be able to investigated various indicators such as pH, nitrates, chlorine, fluorine, and hardness of water that is commonly found in some water sources and examine if the levels are within a healthy range. For example: If a group has a sample of pond water that has a lot of algae found within it. From the students investigation they will observe that the nitrate levels should be elevated and from that observation they are able to possibly concluded that a lot of fertilizer could be running-off (run-off) into the water from the nearby farm land, which in consequence will lead to an algae bloom, which could result in low bioindicators (living organism found within the pond). So from the Water Quality Kit my students are able to have fun carrying out a fun experiment and most important they making real world connections as well examining cause and effect connections.
