Reading is a daily occurrence in my 8th-grade classroom; however, it can be challenging to engage students in reading when there is a lack of interesting titles available that are relevant to students' wide range of interests. My classroom library is in a state of infancy with the current books that I have, but I dream of a time where I can offer all of my students books, graphic novels, biographies, or classics that interest them. This year, students will be given specified reading time during nearly every English block in order to promote wide reading. "A book is a gift you can open again and again" -Garrison Keillor. This time is extremely crucial because it allows students, who may not otherwise read for enjoyment, opportunities to explore new worlds and topics that interest them. Promoting reading for enjoyment and showing students the power of reading is of the utmost importance in ELA because nearly all English skills begin with being a strong reader. I hope to promote a lifelong love of reading to my students by offering them a wide range of titles that they can choose from.
