Books are my most powerful tool as an educator. Books provide information, develop vocabularys, inspire creativity, encourage empathy, and promote conversations. It is important that we, as educators, are purposeful about the books we include in our classroom libraries. Young readers need books with characters of all ethnicities and backgrounds, having a diverse range of experiences. According to "Mirrors, Windows and Sliding Glass Doors" by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, children need books that reflect their own life experiences and books that provide them a lens into the lives and experiences of others. It is important that students are exposed to books written by diverse authors with varrying viewpoints. Each year I hope to instill a love of reading in ALL of my students, while promoting acceptance and respect for themselves and others. I know the key to doing so is through a rich classroom library filled with diverse books.
