Choice is a huge motivator for young readers. They want books about things they are interested in and that are fun. But they become quickly discouraged when the "cool" books are too hard for them. And then they don't want to read. When students can choose from vibrant, appealing books, with words they can read, they get excited and enjoy reading. Reading books they like also keeps kiddos focused longer, and helps them build stamina and comprehension - then they want to read more. And the more they read, the better readers they become. Because I'm a new 1st grade teacher, most of the books in my room are black and white copied booklets, not very appealing. My goal with this project is to make visiting our classroom library an anticipated event. As well as building their minds, 1st graders need opportunities to explore and build with their hands. Using fine motor manipulatives for morning work, instead of doing worksheets, engages their imaginations while limbering up their fingers and minds. Instead of staring at a screen by themselves, students will be able to work with others - communicating, sharing and collaborating to build things that they are excited to show and talk about. Students who have input in their own learning, are engaged in meaningful activities and are enthusiastic about school are well on their way to bright and successful futures.
