I have thought about doing flexible seating for the last two years. I put many hours of thought into what flexible seating should look like for kindergarten. These little students want to learn. However their bodies can't always handle sitting still. The motion stools will be placed at one of the three tables towards the back. This will allow students to be seated at a regular table at its current height. The students will also be able to move while sitting in the stools. The balance ball seats will be placed at another table towards back. The students will also be able to move around without being a distraction to the class or interrupting learning. The wobble cushions will be placed at one of the front tables on the ground. The students will use these cushions to sit on ground level while having the ability to move around and have a choice of two different textures. The table will be lowered to a height that the students can sit on the cushions and still be able to use the table. I have seen the benefits of adding different textures under the table for students to feel. It keeps their hands busy instead of distracting others as well as helps that student focus. I've also see the benefits of kick bands on the chairs. Basically a giant rubber band on the legs of the chairs that the students can kick against. It was amazing how just two of these helped refocus a few students. I'm excited to see how these new seating options will help my class be more active in their own learning.
