My students are among some of the most resilient I know. But in a 50-year-old building without AC and the increase of 90+ degree days we are seeing in the Bay Area, this oppressive heat is holding back learning. I'd like to purchase a portable air conditioner so my classroom is a cooler place to learn on hot fall and early summer days. My room often reaches 90 degrees or higher at the beginning and end of the school year making it difficult for the students to think, learn, and be comfortable. There is a noticeable change in their behavior, and it is tough to blame them when they are sitting in a 30-person classroom in this heat. Furthermore, recent research by Joshua Goodman shows that days of extreme heat hold students' academic achievement back: "Without air conditioning, each 1°F increase in school year temperature reduces the amount learned that year by one percent." I suspect this phenomena is found more often in urban schools like mine where most students are low-income and students of color. Help me help my students by providing us with a comfortable and equitable place to learn!
