I teach at a Hutterite Colony in the Kimball School District. Often funds are not available to receive new literature resources for my middle schoolers. My middle schoolers love to read anything they can get their hands on. However, my classroom library no longer holds books they have not read. Last year, to do a novel unit, I brought all of my family members' personal Kindles to my classroom and purchased the Kindle download of the novel. There are so many advantages to having the Kindle, but the biggest one was immediate access to the dictionary. Since these students are English Language Learners, they were able to grasp and understand the novel and confidently engage in class discussion. Reading is their pastime. They yearn to get their hands on books. After we finished our novel unit students requested kindle books from the State Library. I want to continue to nurture their passion for literature. This year I want to expand our class library and open their eyes to all genres using the Kindle Literature allows these young students to experience the world outside of the Hutterite Colony, an experience they otherwise may never get.
