When clarinet and alto saxophone students come to class and don't have reeds for their instruments, I ask them to take out their instruments and fake play during the 40 minute class period. However, 40 minutes is a long time for beginning 6th grade band students. They stay on task half of the time. If students had reeds to use, they would be able to play and be engaged during class. When trumpet students come to class and don't have valve oil for their instruments, I let them borrow the school's valve oil. But, instead of oiling their valves at home, they spend class time oiling their valves instead. The reeds will be given to students who need them to play their clarinets and alto saxophones. Valve oil will be given to students who need it to keep their trumpets in playing condition. By donating to our project, you will help improve our band's academic achievement through increased concentration, attention and focus because students will be able to play their instruments with the reeds and valve oil.
