The novel, Native Son, is required reading for my honors literature class and because of circumstances beyond their control, my students do not have the money to buy their own books. If each student had a copy, it would make annotating the text so much easier for them, (which is a big part of our curriculum), plus they will be able to keep the book and have a piece of classic literature in their home! "Native Son" is a novel that allows for meaningful class discussion because the main character lives in poverty in Chicago, a city not far from their own hometown. This particular novel helps students see the the right and wrong of one's actions. The story allows the reader to see that problems from the 1940's are very similar to what we see in the news today. If each student had their own copy, they can annotate their books, be able to jot down notes and highlight passages. This will help with comprehension and interpretation of the novel.
