Who wouldn't want to observe miraculous happenings of nature? I always express to students how special it is to have a glimpse into nature, and witness something one wouldn't typically see. I tell them that incredible things are happening around them, you just need to look closely. Observation is a skill that is imperative in all aspects of life. Did you know ants separate the dead from the living? Have you seen ants band together when a path gets destroyed and rebuild? Have you witnessed the 4 stages of a full metamorphosis? Or seen a gross, icky, larva transform into a beautiful ladybug? Have you ever reconstructed bones of an unknown animal from an owl pellet and then determined the diet of the owl? Without these fabulous science tools, probably not. These tools will allow my students to witness, first hand, how incredible nature is. Its projects like these that make science a favorite among students.
