Student discourse is an important part of any classroom. When students engage in meaningful discourse, or classroom discussions, they are able to analyze tasks, ideas, and question one another. In addition, they are able to negotiate meaning and clarify their own understanding of a topic. Purposeful talk is directly linked to student learning and understanding. In my classroom, student discourse is essential. My students complete all of their experiments, projects, and creations in a pair or small group. Students must be able to explain their ideas and observations clearly to their teammates and to the rest of the class. I feel the Qball throwable microphone will be a great tool to motivate even my most reluctant students to participate in classroom discussions.
