The students in my classroom currently don’t have any books because this is a new classroom in our school. While we will eventually get some leveled readers from the school system, we really need books that our students can relate to and see themselves in. Children who are African American need to see and read books written and illustrated by African Americans. Our classroom is made up of students who are in the second grade; this is an inclusion class, so about a third of our students have an IEP. It is important that these students, who do not read on the second grade level, to have access to books that they can read.
