As our program's advisory teacher, I am the first adult our students see when they enter the building each morning at 7:00 am. Most of them are piled in a silent, sleepy heap at the door when I arrive. It would make all the difference to begin our days together with a cup of hot tea, maybe some warm breakfast sandwiches, and then send them on their way to first period with an oatmeal bar for a boost later in the morning. I just need some basic tools, and some tea, to make it happen. I have witnessed first-hand how powerful it can be to deliver a warm cup of tea to a student's desk, sit down beside them, and use the following moments together to pause and reframe our flurried perception of the day's events. Establishing this ritual in the morning will carve out space for these moments of pause for students throughout the day, which often leads to critical side-by-side conversations where our eyes and hands are otherwise occupied, pressure is released, and our bodies feel a bit of rest. For some students, tea is not available at home, and this would be their first introduction to a simple, healthy tool for the management of their bodies, minds, and souls when life feels otherwise out of control. We are intentional when we establish routines and practices unique to our program that add value to our students' days and reinforce the strength of our community. Each sends a signal that this space was created for them, and by them. I would like to add the gift of sharing hot tea and a warm breakfast together to the list of rituals that nurture and sustain them.
