Novels are not only an excellent way to develop students' literacy skills, but also develop a student's love and interest for reading. Both "Esperanza renace" and "Because of Mr. Terupt" touch on themes of adversity and resilience. My students can easily relate to and learn from the characters in both of these texts, either through their own cultural heritage or their experiences in school. Help my students develop a true passion for literacy in both languages as they explore the many trials and tribulations the characters of these books experience as well as the changes and growth these characters undergo. While reading short texts in our classroom are an excellent way to develop certain literacy skills, reading novels really helps students analyze character development and relate those analyses to their own lives. My goal is to always push students' thinking to higher levels, and novels will help us get there.
