Tell me, I forget, show me, I remember, involve me, I understand. -Carl Orff It was Carl Orff’s philosophy that children learn best while at play. One of the most engaging items of “play” in my music room are the xylophones or Orff instruments. My music students are in need of one more instrument to allow a 2:1 ratio of student to instrument. Right now the music room has enough xylophones for a little less than half of most classes. With this bass xylophone, students could stay engaged in playing and learning with a partner and my entire class could play as a balanced ensemble, with partners taking turns on a xylophone and other classroom instruments. Some of the ways students learn through play with Orff instruments: -playing engaging ensemble pieces learned by rote and by reading traditional notation -learning to play along with other musicians as a “team” -listening to the balance of each “voice” in the ensemble -improvising and composing their own music -connecting with others through shared musical experience This bass costs more than my annual budget. By supporting this project, you’ll provide the 430 kindergarten through 6th graders at my school with a quality instrument that will last for decades.
