Our school uses restorative practices to build community and resolve conflicts. We are always striving for better ways to improve our learning environment. This year we are creating a Peace Room for our school community. As of now, it is just a space with a few staff donated items. The community will learn emotional regulation and self-care techniques through Mindfulness and trauma sensitive yoga shapes. We want to provide a comfortable space where students can learn to better regulate their emotional state and decrease the number of consequences that isolate them from the community i.e. suspensions. The yoga mats and props will be used to explore restorative postures and in small group yoga shape practices. There will be easy access to various resources for guided mindfulness and breathing techniques. These techniques and practices will keep more students in their classrooms and increase time spent learning. The positive connections created for this space and the students will allow them to better manage their emotions with support, as they transition to be more successful on their own. I have attended workshops for Mindfulness, teaching trauma-sensitive yoga shapes and I am a member of the Southeastern PA Chapter for the Coalition of Schools Educating Mindfully (COSEM). I will be scheduled to lead sessions during the day for our highest need students. We are teaching our staff these same techniques and encourage them to practice daily. Our school community will also have access to these resources before, during and after school hours.
