Soil is an important nonrenewable resource on earth that is quickly being depleted by both urbanization and poor agricultural practices. My students will be participating in a soil analysis lab in order to see how these things have impacted our rural town. They will then extend this lab to come up with an action plan using the quantitative data they collected using these kits to improve soil quality around the town. My students will be practicing hand-on, experiential learning by utilizing these test kits as well as practicing engineering skills to build different types of windmills. The students will be using the windmill kits to build different designs in order to see which one most efficiently produces clean energy. By building these with recycled bottles they will also be giving a second life to plastic that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
