When learning how to read and write, children use language and experiences that are familiar to them to recognize words, understand texts, and to write or tell stories. However, the large educational publishers that serve urban and multicultural public school districts generally develop basal readers and trade book collections to reach a national mainstream audience. As a result, few text selections include a reflection of my students' diversity or the urban setting in which they live. Having literature that will add to my collection will authentically reflect and celebrate the students in my classroom. It will also engage and support their literacy learning and will promote culturally relevant instruction by reflecting images of themselves in the stories they read.
