The purpose of my project is to fill my classroom with books that students see themselves in as well as other people and places that they are not exposed to in their everyday life. I recently heard children's book author and illustrator Grace Lin talk about how books can act as windows and mirrors where our children look out to see other people and places as well as inward to see themselves. We want our students to feel confident in themselves and know how important they are. Offering a diverse range of books for students to read sets the path for their own self-worth as well as how they see others. Giving our students access to books that discuss important topics and people is crucial to helping our students grow and expand their thinking as people. We want to expose our students to texts that discuss empathy, acceptance, and inclusion in the classroom so that when they go out into the world these are established skills. The books included in this project focus on broadening the types of texts we are putting in our students' hands. We need to focus on texts that are implementing diversity, acceptance, kindness, empathy, knowledge, and so much more into our students' learning. These books give students a mirror to look in to as they open up a text and see themselves in a book. They allow students to look through a window and read about a world or culture that is not one of their own. Giving our students these opportunities is crucial for their development as well as their emotional intelligence.
