Students need interesting, enriching math experiences beyond rote textbook work. Engaging them in mathematical work that requires the integration of literacy is a great way to enrich my students’ learning. Math literature helps bring a lesson to life by allowing students to examine real-world applications for mathematical concepts, become comfortable with content-specific math language, and provide opportunities to discuss their learning with peers. It’s a wonderful tool for before, during, and after a lesson because it can also provide enrichment for accelerated students who tend to complete their work ahead of their peers. Above all, math literature is the fun twist to a regular math block that every student can enjoy!
