My students are an amazing bunch of 2nd graders attending a low income New York City public school. My classroom has a number of English Language Learners, and students with special needs, who are being mainstreamed into general education. In our classroom, we push children to not only be good students, but to be good teachers to one another. My students enjoy learning and growing together with their peers. At our school, we have an annual science fair in which each classroom chooses a topic to study, researches and conducts experiments, and presents their work with a hands-on, interactive exhibit. This year, we want to study recycling. We will be researching the process of recycling and how waste goes through a recycling plant. We will also try to answer the bigger question of WHY we recycle and how does recycling improve the Earth? We will read and write extensively on this topic as we also conduct experiments in preparation for our science fair presentation.
