Research shows for students to be better readers, they need to read more, and they will read more if they have choice in what they read. Students also need time to read; therefore, we start with 10 minutes of reading at the beginning of class. Every. Single. Day. I then conference with 2-3 students about their reading during that time. This is the work that helps close the achievement gap in literacy. My goal goes beyond reading comprehension though--I want my students to build a life-long love of reading. To do this, I need books in a variety of genres, reading levels, and topics for students to choose from, and I need them to be easily accessible right in our classroom. Unfortunately, it is the rare high school student who reads for pleasure, or even reads the texts assigned, but through this workshop model, I have found even the most reluctant of readers can find a book they enjoy. By reading more, students build important literacy skills they need for college, careers, and their lives. They also build empathy and find a healthy way to process emotions. One of these books could be the one that starts a student's journey as a reader.
