Every child is an individual - and every child deserves to learn (including children with special needs who may be identified with autism, down's syndrome, developmental delay, intellectual disability, head injury, learning disability, emotional disability etc). To achieve this I utilize research based interventions to maximize my students participation and success. What is evident from research is that we all learn best by strong visuals paired with language. To achieve this, I try using colorful activities - with visuals - that are interesting and engaging. I design a visual/picture schedule to help them know how their day will look like (i.e. Bus; Classroom; Circle Time; Playground; Fine Motor Activity; Lunch; Nap; End of School Day; Bus etc). For participation in Fine Motor Activities I give step by step directions - with visual/picture directions while I instruct the children with verbal directions (some children need the support of the visuals to be successful and follow along). We also use "Picture Exchange" for children who have language difficulties (can't adequately express themselves or follow verbal directions i.e. Autism; Down's Syndrome etc by designing individualized picture books, with pictures to support communication i.e. to express possible needs i.e. "I need help"; "I'm not feeling well"; "I want chicken nuggets and mashed potato for lunch"; "I want to swing" etc. Having a colored copier/printer and ink, this will allow me to support children to learn more efficiently and effectively - printing realistic images in color. By involving my students in motivating and an enjoyable style of learning, designed and suited specifically to each child's needs, and by encouraging a "hands-on" tasks that are bright and colorful, each student can understand better, follow along, participate actively and progress!
