About my class

Flexible seating creates greater choice and increased student engagement. Children choose most often to spend their time on the floor, engaging in play and learning. During independent work time, my students choose time and again to pick a spot upon the floor to read and write. When writing, they use a clipboard to serve as a flat surface upon which to create their stories. Oftentimes, they are observed attempting to write while lying on their bellies; trying to find a position that is the most comfortable for them. When reading, many students again choose to lie upon their bellies or backs in an effort to find a more comfortable position to read their favorite book. The surf chairs will allow greater flexibility for students choosing the kinds of seating and places in to which to complete their work successfully. For my more active students, the chairs will encourage them to work on core stability musculature as well as engage their brain to recognize increased body awareness in a fixed space. These chairs will also serve as an optimal means to conduct small group work upon the floor; some of the activities to include making words, reading and writing tasks.
