My speech therapy caseload is unique and diverse. Every one of my students has a speech or language disability that makes communicating difficult for them. Some of my students have more than one disability including autism, cerebral palsy, and specific learning disabilities. With such a diverse caseload, I need to create student specific and group specific activities to help them reach for the stars and complete their speech and language goals. I often pay out of pocket for these materials because I want to provide my students with the best services possible. These specific materials will help my students complete speech and language activities that are engaging, interactive, and evidence based. My students enjoy being creative in my therapy room. They love to cut, glue, color, and write because those things are fun and engaging. Some of my students have a difficult time focusing and fidget toys are an excellent way to keep their hands busy and their minds focused on the task ahead. Organization is extremely important in my room because I need to be able to find my materials quickly and easily to provide quality speech and language therapy. My students LOVE books and I try to incorporate them as often as possible. Books provide incredible opportunities for my students to practice skills such as sequencing, story mapping, learning vocabulary, story comprehension, and answering questions, etc... Books are engaging, provide multiple exposures to the different aspects of language, and help improve academics. Many of the students on my caseload have difficulties producing speech sounds, which make them difficult to understand by unfamiliar listeners. Speech tube phones help my students hear their own productions which help them learn to self-correct their speech. Self-correction is an important step in the right direction when it comes to correct speech production.
