I am trying to affirm student contributions and bring people together through performance of songs, rap, and poetry over class-performed music using instruments they connect with. Adding drums as a rhythmic background lends itself well to these artistic forms. Students are naturally drawn to drumming and learn large-motor independence, coordination and make left-right brain connections by performing on a drum set. In addition, drums are used in nearly every culture's music and students are able to bring in rhythms they hear outside of school to make meaningful contributions to the music classroom. This Donors Choose request includes an electronic drum set as well as an amplifier so drums can be heard without headphones. The amplifier is needed both for classroom learning and performances.
