Middle School is a time when students are figuring out who they are and who they want to be. A novel is a valuable resource which helps them analyze what the characters are doing and thinking, but also taking time to relate it to their own actions and thoughts. The Outsiders is a great novel for that. The complexity of plot, conflict, theme and character development in The Outsiders will give my students the opportunity to enjoy a great piece of literature while also applying the skills that go into analysis of a text. The students will be analyzing this text through a writer's lens and a reader's lens, which will allow them to understand the various ways that a text can be viewed. Through the writer's lens, students will gain the opportunity to work on their narrative writing through the novel. Thinking about topics like "What is the effect of the point of view and what would happen if it changed? Why would the author choose this point of view?" Through the reader's lens, students will look at topics like "How does society affect the different characters throughout the novel?" These higher order thinking skills will be a valuable way to think critically about the text.
