Thank you so much for funding Maureen McNally's project at South Hadley High School. My name is Chelsea Vigue, and I began teaching art at SHHS in January 2026, following Ms. McNally's well-deserved retirement. She requested the items through this grant, and they were purchased just in time for my arrival. I am thrilled to continue her work and build on the wonderful foundation she created. \r\n\r\nThanks to your generous support through the Donors Choose grant, we were able to purchase two brand new iPads and opaque white glazes for our ceramics and sculpture classes. These tools have already had a meaningful impact on both student engagement and creative exploration. \r\n\r\nThe iPads have been particularly transformative for my AP Art student and our Therapeutic Transitional Centered Art (TTC) students. The AP Art student has embraced digital art making using Procreate, producing imaginative and technically sophisticated work. For TTC students, many of whom have sensory sensitivities, having this alternative tool has been invaluable. The accessibility and flexibility of digital art such as layering have empowered them to explore new techniques, build confidence, and engage more fully in their creative process. \r\n\r\nIn our ceramics intensive class, which this semester includes 26 students working daily on a variety of clay projects, the opaque white glaze have been a class favorite. It has enabled students to experiment with surface design, contrast, and layering techniques, enhancing both the quality of their work and their understanding of the creative process. Having a sufficient supply ensures that all students can participate fully, take create risk, and achieve the results they envision. \r\n\r\nOverall, this grant has enriched our program by expanding opportunities in both traditional 3-D work and digital art. Our students are more engaged, inspired, and equipped to express themselves creatively. Your generosity has made these experiences possible and our students are grateful for the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow. Thanks to your support in funding our fish tanks, our students have welcomed two new companions—Pablo and Picasso—into their daily lives. These little fish have quickly become beloved members of our learning community, and their presence has transformed our classroom in ways both big and small.\r\n\r\nFrom the very beginning, the students took ownership of this project. They eagerly voted on names, debating and laughing until they settled on Pablo and Picasso—two names that reflect both creativity and personality. That act of naming was more than just fun; it gave the students a sense of responsibility and connection. They see Pablo and Picasso not just as pets, but as part of the classroom family. Every day, students check on them, feed them, and watch their movements with fascination. The tanks have become gathering spots where curiosity and care come together.\r\n\r\nThe impact has been remarkable. Students who sometimes struggle to stay engaged find themselves drawn to the tanks, calming their minds as they watch the fish swim. Others have discovered that caring for Pablo and Picasso helps them relax during stressful moments. The fish have become a source of comfort, a reminder that even small acts of care can make a big difference. In fact, several students have already begun brainstorming ways to make the fish tanks even more fun—suggesting toys, decorations, and enrichment activities to keep Pablo and Picasso happy. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and it's wonderful to see them channel their creativity into caring for living creatures.\r\n\r\nYour gift has also sparked important conversations about responsibility and continuity. As vacation approaches, students have expressed genuine concern about what will happen to Pablo and Picasso while they are away. Their worry shows just how deeply they care, and it has opened up meaningful discussions about planning, stewardship, and trust. These are lessons that extend far beyond the classroom walls, teaching students about accountability and the importance of thinking ahead.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the fish tanks have created a sense of community. Students gather around to watch Pablo and Picasso, sharing observations and laughter. They take turns caring for them, and in doing so, they learn to collaborate and support one another. The tanks have become more than just a science project or a classroom decoration—they are living reminders of the power of shared responsibility and the joy of nurturing life.\r\n\r\nNone of this would have been possible without you. Your generosity has given our students not only the gift of two beautiful fish tanks, but also the gift of connection, relaxation, and responsibility. You have helped create a classroom environment where students feel safe, engaged, and inspired. Pablo and Picasso may be small, but the lessons they bring are enormous.\r\n\r\nOn behalf of our students, thank you for believing in the importance of hands-on, compassionate learning. Thank you for giving our classroom the chance to grow in new and unexpected ways. And thank you for making it possible for Pablo and Picasso to swim happily among us, reminding us every day that care, creativity, and community are at the heart of education.","fullyFundedDate":1755714706674,"projectUrl":"project/fish-and-good-emotional-health/9626956/","projectTitle":"Fish and Good Emotional Health!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9487051"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61015","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":479,"numTeachers":46,"percentFrplEligible":37,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":75,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":16,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"10.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":92.5,"schoolId":61015,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about South Hadley High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"South Hadley High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/massachusetts/south-hadley-public-schools/south-hadley-high-school/61015"}
