In order to reach my students' diverse writing skills, our school has adapted the Lucy Calkins' Writing Workshop curriculum, which requires students to have a different, physical area to gather for direct instruction. This gathering area requires students to sit close to a teacher, in a different setting, away from their assigned seats. These materials will not only create a comfortable physical space for my students but will allow me to teach and reach them at their own levels. This new, physical space allows them to ignore ambient noise presented in the traditional setting. It allows students to focus by creating a more intimate setting. As I instruct within a closer proximity, students will have different seat options; more seating options allow students to sit comfortably as they attentively follow the lesson closely. Additionally, the easel offers a focal point that is easily seen by all students, creating an inclusive environment. I'm excited to see how my students can thrive in an optimal learning environment.
