Working with students that are Deaf and Hard of Hearing is a passion of mine. This year, I have the opportunity to work with students that are Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the elementary school and middle school. An area of focus we address with these students, is their ability to write in English. This is a vital language skill that will impact their ability to do well in higher education, get a job and communicate effectively with people that are unable to sign.
These grade level materials will help me to teach the students how to organize their brilliant ideas into grammatically correct English sentences. These materials will also help to foster independence for each student as they work on creating their own sentences and stories. Every day these students amaze me with their understanding of educational concepts, unfortunately they are not able to put these concepts down on paper in a format that is easily understood. These materials will allow me to expand on the activities I am currently incorporating. The writing process folders will allow the students to take the information I have given them about how to write a sentence and allow them to self monitor their grammar and use of adjectives and adverbs. I plan to use the Build-A-Story Flip book and the Build-A-Paragraph flip book with the younger students. These books will give them the format for creating paragraphs and stories. The Daily Language Practice Journals will provide structured practice for grammar rules and the conventions of English. These journals will be an excellent review before we begin the writing process.
