Currently, our AP English Language and Composition curriculum in dominated by nonfiction texts, and appropriately so. The course focuses on rhetoric, and on understanding and evaluating arguments. Nonfiction texts and terrific for this purpose. However, there is a literature void in the class, and I am looking to fill it with a rich text that is also highly rhetorical, and Animal Farm is a great book for this. In Animal Farm, Orwell uses masterful imagery and storytelling to illustrate the nature of revolutions, counter-revolutions, and the dynamics of power. Students will benefit from reading this text in addition to other course texts in that they will see how creativity can be a vehicle for argument. Animal Farm is specifically listed in the 2019 AP English Language and Composition Course and Exam Description as a suggested text for imaginative literature for the class, and I think it would greatly enhance our curriculum.
