Acquiring English as a second language is not an easy task. Research shows that it can take more than five years for an English language learner to learn the academic language. Learning English requires the acquisition of basic interpersonal communication skills (BICS) and cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP). Visual Information provides a scaffold and a bridge between the BICS and CALP. The donations to this project will help my students understand new information and develop new concepts through visuals. Projecting videos or pictures is an engaging way to help my students develop their academic vocabulary, language and comprehension skills. These pieces of technology will facilitate the creation of meaningful and authentic learning experiences as I incorporate smartboard activities in my lessons. The donations will help my English language learners and native English speaking students develop their early biliteracy skills. Research shows that children’s alphabet knowledge is a strong predictor of later reading success. Using the appropriate videos that show great visual representations and catchy sounds of the alphabet sequence, letter names and sounds will keep my kids engaged and will facilitate the acquisition of their early literacy skills.
