My school has been without and elementary art program for at least three years. I'm excited to say that has changed for the better this year! Every child, Pre-K through 4th grade, will get to experience a weekly art class. Since we have not had a proper art program for a few years now, we are lacking many of the basic art room supplies. It is important for these children to get to use quality art supplies so that their first experience in the art room is a memorable one. We will cover everything from basic color theory, to learning about art, artists and culture from around the world. Art is not only important for developing fine motor skills, but also helpful in developing new and creative ways to solve problems. Art also introduces a different way for students to express themselves. As Georgia O'Keeffe said, "I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for." I believe it is so important for my students to understand that here is a different way to express themselves, especially if they come from homes where there may not be much verbal communication.
