My project is focused on teaching students with learning differences basic vocabulary and sentence structures so that that they can improve language skills to more effectively interact in a school setting. The materials will help me implement a literacy-based program with corresponding picture vocabulary that aids younger students, as well as students with learning differences, in learning functional vocabulary and sentence structure.
The books are part of an already developed, sequenced lesson system. The mesh bags, markers, and sentence strips will aid in creating take-home materials based on lesson plans so that families can use these materials at home as well. The color printer will aid me in printing picture-vocabulary in color, as well as pictures and/or activity sheets that correspond with book lessons.
Teaching through literacy provides my students with experiences to events they may not have encountered in their lives. I want to give my students a narrative to learn from and connect too. If my students have not yet had experiences they can connect with in the stories, then they can develop one through the narrative. Additionally, incorporating the communication and language concepts through the stories creates a play-based type experience that my students will enjoy.
