I chose these pieces of literature in order to provide rigorous language arts instruction with real books. I chose both nonfiction and fiction titles. I plan to use these titles to teach a variety of concepts as found in the Oklahoma academic standards. We know that quality language arts instruction is rooted in consistent reading and writing. These text choices are designed to give students this experience, but are also designed to strengthen student reading comprehension skills through thoughtful analysis of text, speaking, and listening skills-- something that is so critical to their academic success. Our classroom culture is centered around identity, perspective, and inclusion, and maintaining that is something I take very seriously. I know that these text choices will fit in with our classroom culture and validate various student competencies.
