Students aren't able to access higher brain function if they are stressed out and in an uncomfortable situation. A sterile, cold environment is not where learning should take place. My students deserve a classroom that is warm and inviting. Even though students in my room speak different languages and come from diverse backgrounds, they all just want to feel safe and welcome. By helping me meet those basic needs, you are giving them the opportunity to take academic risks and feel like they are part of a learning community. Only when a student is comfortable in a classroom are they able to engage with and think critically about the world. The shelf and lights are the first steps in creating that environment.
