Technology is shrinking our world. Students today are beginning to understand that issues affecting people thousands of miles away are often the same issues we are facing or are impacting our own community. Video and online news programming are helpful in improving that understanding, but it can't accomplish be accomplished through one media type. Students need high-quality written material that sparks interest in civic education and provides support for growth in reading and understanding information. Junior Scholastic has a stellar reputation for providing news that is interesting to middle school students without much of the bias that can be present in advertisement-funded news. It is available online as well, helping increase access for all learners through a read-aloud option. I especially like the science and math extensions available with their materials, providing connections across the curriculum and fitting with our programs holistic approach to learning.
