I believe that learning comes from thinking and that one of the best ways to show mathematical thinking is through visuals. When students are given opportunities to draw and model their thinking, it helps them make connections to their prior learning as well as the learning of others. Organizing the papers used to show the thinking, however, can be an overwhelming task. My students will use the classroom scanner to scan their math work and then organize the pictures into folders and webs that show the connections between mathematical concepts. In an age where there is a big push to utilize technology in the math classroom, students can get away from really showing their thinking and making valuable discoveries through physically comparing their work from different days or different units of study. If their notes and ideas are scanned and saved electronically, however, the students will be able to access their prior thinking easily and pull up their work even if they are away from their notebook. This is also a great communication tool for parents and other family members, as current and past work can be viewed and progress and improvements can be monitored.
