Majority of the time I allow my students to be independent learners. I give them time to struggle with their work and guide their thinking. This gives me an idea of their misconceptions, but also pushes them to have a growth mindset and approach the problems in many ways to see what works. An open space with flexible seating where they can work anywhere in the classroom helps them to have this private thinking time. For example, we do CGI Math within our classroom, which begins with a warm-up, a problem of the day, and 10-15 minutes of private thinking time, and a group follow-up where we share our findings or solutions. Having flexible seating within my classroom will help give my students different space options for private thinking.
