Our school is implementing more classic literature into the curriculum. Generally, students fear classic novels due to the complexity. For this reason, I selected Phantom of the Opera to read. This story is not only current, but can be framed in a very engaging way. Students will see the classical elements as they are trying to figure out the mystery of the Phantom. What is better than a mystery to start off the year? Students will see that classics are not always scary. They can solve murders, kidnapping cases, and the legend of the Phantom, all while meeting state standards. I hope to bring excitement into the classroom and improve test scores at the same time.
