The materials for this project are focused on the students having a voice in finding solutions to community issues. After we complete research on Ewa Beach community economics and career opportunities, the students will choose an issue to research in-depth on their own. They will then share their findings, concerns, or solutions with a variety of government officials and leaders of industry by writing a letter to be mailed out by the end of the quarter. This letter uses business formatting and allows the students to use their voice to participate in civics discussions that can affect their futures. Learning to communicate formally is a life skill. It takes lots of practice. It takes lots of ink to print. It takes lots of editing and patience. It takes envelopes! The excitement is palpable in the classroom when the responses start rolling in. This is usually my students first opportunity seeing the impact of a concerned, involved citizenship in action. Students feel empowered and understand how communication can lead to positive change in the world.
